A Woman Like That, a documentary film (view trailer below), chronicles the life and times of the Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi (July 8, 1593–1652). She is considered today to be one of the most accomplished painters in the Italian Early Baroque period, a generation influenced by Caravaggio.
Artemsia Gentileschi’s time, however, was inhospitable to women artists, who were expected to paint portraits — not the major historical and religious scenarios that made up the core of Artemisia Gentlieschi’s work. Her story also includes a tragic turn — the seven-month trial, in a suit brought by the artist’s father, that pitted the artist against a mentor accused of raping her.
Event sponsored by the Core division, the Communication and Creative Media division, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
