On the agenda…
Noah Fishman of High Fields Composting of Wolcott, Vermont
Our mission is to close the loop on community-based, sustainable food and agricultural systems, thus addressing soil health, water quality, solid waste, farm viability, and climate change. The overarching vision of Close the Loop Vermont! is to remediate the root causes of our broken food system, diverting food “waste” from landfills and turning it back into soil to grow more food—closing the loop on the food system.
We provide technical services, education and resources to help communities to develop durable community compost programs including compost sites, collection programs and training for businesses and residents. In addition we produce compost and conduct innovative research at our compost site in Wolcott, Vermont.
We try to support the compost sector, and intentionally try not to compete with other compost producers. Competition on the side of developing compost programs is with the pricing of trash and the idea of food scraps as waste and not a resource
We have a unique experience set and a reputation for quality in terms of compost technical service and education programs. We are fairly uniquely positioned and as a nonprofit more affordable than other consulting firms.
Who Are Your Clients?:
State Agency of Natural Resources, Waste Management Districts, foundations, compost facilities, schools, business including restaurants, hospitals, grocery stores that have food scraps.
What Are Your Challenges?:
We need a strategic marketing strategy and communications plan, a unified brand, new website and collateral materials. We have some pieces of this now, but they are not unified.
Currently Marketing Your Organization?:
annual appeal, email list, press releases, website, social media, word of mouth
Have A Marketing Plan?:
What Is Your Profit Goal?:
we rely on grants with some contract work. our compost site is in startup mode and not yet profitable. The intention is to scale up the site to make it profitable and to continue to leverage grant and individual fundraising.
We want to build a community of practice around composting and feel uniquely positioned at the national level to do so. we want to develop approachable messaging that brings together a wide array of partners and stakeholders
